Cappadocia Region

Map of Turkey

Cappadocia is located in the central area of Turkey. The Cappadocia region was formed 60 million years ago by erosion of soft layers of lava and ash from volcanoes in the area, composing with wind and rain over millions of years. Human settlement at the Cappadocia region dates back to the Paleolithic era. The approach is across the costal mountain range, where we encountered snow on the road. Up on the large plains we encountered a stopping point on the old Silk Road. The Silk Road was a network of Eurasian trade routes active from the second century BCE until the mid-15th century. Spanning over 6,400 km, it played a central role in facilitating economic, cultural, political, and religious interactions between the East and West.

Cappadocia promotes itself as The Cradle of History. In the 12th century BC, a dark period began in the region with the collapse of the present empire. The Persian invaded the area in the 6th century BC, and thereafter the power was changing again. In the 3rd century, Christians came to the Cappadocia which became a centre for education. Many traces like old church structures cut into the rock are still semi-intact today.
