Yosemite National Park is a national park in eastern California. The park is 3,074 km2 and attracts up to 4 million visitors a year. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, lakes, mountains, meadows, glaciers, and biological diversity. Yosemite was critical to the development of the concept of national parks.
A dominant feature in the valley is the El Capitain rock face, a sheer, vertical wall of 914 m. It has been a mecca for rock climbers for a very long time, with a number of climbing routes. It may take a week or more to climb, but in 2018 a two-person team free-climbed in less than 2 hours!
An even more famous mountain for rock climbing is the Half Dome, with over 50 different climbing routes. This mountain reach 1445 m above the valley floor, extending the top to 2695 m above sea level.
Another very notable feature in Yosemite Valley is the Yosemite Fall, with a free fall height of 739 m.
During on of our visits, we encountered no less the 5 brown bears roaming the area, searching for food in garbage cans. Our young son shouted "teddy" an ran towards the bears!
