We rented a car and drove west along the coast, the first part on a modern road across an impressive bridge before climbing up the mountain on steep, winding road. The top of the mountain was too foggy to take that route. Instead, we more or less followed the mountain ridge towards the west towards Porto Moniz on the north-west of Madeira. The road down from the mountain is vert steep, narrow and with a lot of sharp turn - resample droving town a huge bookshelf!
Porto Moniz is a fishing village with about 3000 inhabitants. For the tourist, the big ocean pools in the volcanic landscape is the main landmark in the area.
