Valparaiso has a population of 300.000, and is the most important seaport in Chile, including the base for the Chilean Navy. Valparaiso was also a very important harbor for the trans Europe to California passenger lines before the Panama canal. The city is located 115 km west of Santiago. The route is served by very high class express busses.
Geographically, the city is located on a very narrow strip of flat land in front of several hills. The city stretches up the hills, and therefore, a number of funiculars have been built to make it easier for people to move to the higher parts of the city. Currently, there are 16 of these, of witch 7 are in daily use, the others being restored. The funiculars (acensores in Spanish) are on the UN World Heritage List.
We visited Valparaiso on a day trip. Unfortunately, most of the day was overcast and partially foggy, hence the pictures do not give full justice to this beautiful city.
