Valetta

Valletta is the capital of Malta with a population of only 6.500 inhabitants, but with about 480.000 in the metropolitan area.

Valletta's 16th-century buildings were constructed by the Knights Hospitaller. The city is mainly Baroque in character, and is noted for its fortifications, consisting of bastions, and with the beauty of its churches.

The city was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.The city has 320 monuments, all within an area of 0.55 km2, making it one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world.

Knights HospitallerThe Knights Hospitaller originated in Jerusalem, and were active in Malta in the period 1530-1800. The knights were an military-style Catholic religious organization with advanced knowledge, including medicine. We visited one of their medical schools.
