The Rose Castle Paintings

The Rose Castle paintings are created by the Norwegian painter Vebjørn Sand, who has created a number of monumental projects. The site for the paintings is located in a clearing in the forest close to Frognerseteren on top of the Holmenkollen Hill, overlooking Oslo and the fjord beyond.

The paintings depict the occupation of the German army during World War II, the rise of the underground movement, fighting the Germans, the peace where the Norwegian king Haakon returns from his exhale in England, and the nurses caring for children fathered by German soldiers. The whole installation contains over 300 paintings that sustain the weather during the winters.

The five metal sails symbolize the 5 years Norway was occupied. The leaves on the salis symbolize hope and new growth.
