Basilica di san Marco is the third church on this site, begun probably in 1063 to express Venice's growing civic consciousness and pride.
It is a beautiful church with the interior of several domes, vaults, and the upper walls were covered with gold-ground mosaics depicting saints, prophets, and biblical scenes.
