Split

Split is a city with a population of about 175 000, the second largest city in Croatia after Zagreb with about 650 000. The city is an impotent commercial harbor in Croatia. Since sailing with private yachts is very popular on the Croatian coast, Split is a large and popular harbor for the sailors, along with a similar harbor in the nearby city of Trogir.

The Romans occupied the Adriatic coast for a long time, and emperor Diocletian built a glorious palace there around year 300 AD, and he lived there until his death.  Thereafter, Split became part of the Byzantine Empire, one reason being close to Venezia across the sea. The castle ruins are still a very important part of the Split Old Town.
