South to Grindavik

The first stop south was the Viking Village in Hafnarfjordur. The village re-enacts the image from the viking age, with buildings and statues.

The next stop on the trip south was Bessastaðir. The property of Bessastaðir on Álftanes, near Reykjavík, has a history that runs from the Age of Settlement. In its present form, Bessastaðir consists of a group of buildings including the main building, which is the home of the President of Iceland. The Bessastaðir Church is located on the site.

Grindavik is located on the South coast, and is a port for fisheries. It was not far off this town that the new island Surtsey popped out of the ocean in 1963. From Grindavik we drove east through a very volcanic landscape.
