South Coast

The coast road south and then east back towards Funchal may be descried as "left turns connected by right  turns", as the road runs in and out of gullies made by runoff from the volcano at the time Madeira was formed (take a look at the map shown in the folder above!).

 

The south coastline is very steep, with very few places to develop a settlement. One of these is the town of Calheta, where Winston Churchill used to go on vacation.
