The Sacsayhuamán site is located on a relative flat area in the hills above Cuzco, at an elevation of 3700 m. The structures around a ceremonial area, consist of walls that originally formed a fortress. It is built with huge stones, some being 6 m tall, and fitted together so densely you cannot stick a knife blade between them. Also the stones are shaped in a manner to withstand strong earthquakes. Strangely, no suitable tools for this huge task have been found, in spite of the relatively short time span from then till modern times. The real purpose of the site is unknown, but it is assumed to be built for ceremonial purposes.
