Portimao

Portimao is a city with about 40.000 inhabitants. It has a major commercial port, and is the only one on the Algarve coast served by cruise ships. Rio Arade meets the ocean, having passed through the inland town of Silves (see seperately). The Romans navigated the river up to Silves.  The city has a long history related to fisheries, and there is a musum dedicated to the period where sardines were fished and canned in factories in the 1920-ies. That early, the factory provided full time day care for children, permitting the mothers to work canning sardines. Next to Portimao you will find Praia da Rocha, a large beach proteceted by cliffs at the East end.
