North to Reykholt

North of Reykjavik, the geology is more mountainous, and still fairly isolated except for a few fishing villages. The road took us through a tunnel under Hvalfjørdur - "the fjord of whales". This used to be a naval base during WW2.


Reykholt was the home of the poet and politician Snorri Sturluson, who lived during the Middle Ages (1179 –1241). In periods, he also lived in Norway He wrote poems, recorded history, and was a politician in Iceland. He was the most important person in Iceland over a period of 20 years.
