With its central location in the Agean Sea, the island has traces of humans dating back to year 3000 BC. During the later periods, Naxos dominated the trade routes in the inner Mediterranean Sea. The island has plenty of water, and has good conditions for agriculture.

The permanent populaton is roughly 7000 inhabitants. However, during the summer season is a popular destination for tourists, as the inner Mediterranean  warms up early in the year. We went there during May 2003.
