Many of the mountains are quite high, many in the range 2000-2500 m. Therefore, only a few roads cross between the cost and the Beqaa Valley to the east. Some roads are closed during winter.
However, there are surprisingly many towns at elevations 1000-1500 m. Many of the buildings are apartment houses, built for owners from Arab nations, seeking cooler temperatures during the hot summers.
In Biblical times, the cedar tree was a term of endearment. The timber was used for construction of ships, among others products. The large forests from old times were cut, and only a few grows remain. One is the town of Cedars. The Cedar tree is the main symbol in the Lebanese flag.
