Misiones

The Jesuits founded a mission in Argentina from the 17th century. They were the first to establish universities to the country, as they placed emphasis on knowledge. Jesuits were also instrumental in introducing wine to Argentina. There are many remains of the estancias, the farms which they built, on the territory of in the province later to become nemed Misiones. The perimeter of the Jesuit missions includes thirty villages and straddles the borders of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. Five of these villages have been designated UNESCO World Heritage sites. At one point in time, the Jesuits were evicted from the country, may be because they become a too strong local force?

We visited the San Ignacio Miní. At its peak, the settlement had a population of 4,000 converts. Ruins of several buildings are standing and are impressive in design.
