Mendoza has a population of about 1.25 million. The climate is very dry and mild, but water is supplied by the runoff from the Andes. And because of the high snow covered mountains, it may quite cold when the winds drop down from the mountains.
The Mendoza district is the main winegrowing area in Argentina, The volume is about 400 million bottles, wich is 70 % of the wine production in the country. An Argentinian specialty is the Malbec grape. We visited Norton Winery, one of the biggest, and Nieto Senetiner, an old winery from 1888.
Norton was created in 1895 by an Englishman. It is now a very modern in many respects. To secure a good water supply in this dry climate, it has built huge underground reservoirs.
Nieto Senetiner has a very pleasant park surrounding the buildings, and we were tasting wines in the shadow of nice trees.
