Mendoza has a population 1,25 million. It is located on a plane, at an average elevation of 850 m. Located in the rain shadow by the Andes, the area is in general very dry. For this reason, the city try to preserve all trees, and in the city, irrigation ditches feed the trees alongside the sidewalk. Actually, the citizens must apply for permission to cut down a tree!
Argentina was declared independent state from Spain in 1816, and after a series of wars, it was in 1911 that Argentina became a truly "free state". In the General San Martin Park we saw Cerro de Gloria, a large monument in memory of the last war.
