Magellan Strait

The leg from Chacabuco through Magellan Strait to Punta Arenas is long - 821 nm / 1520 km. The voyage took a couple of days. This part of Chile has a very low population, as most of the land runs steeply into the ocean, thus makes it unsuitable for agriculture. On the other hand, fishing, and in later years, farming of salmon are the main businesses. For us tourists, the scenery was very idyllic in sheltered waterway swith very little wing, and with the sun high in the sky.

As you travel South, the scenery is changing from lush green to barren, cold, and snow-capped mountains the further South you get. But surprisingly, the Southern end of the Magellan Strait is only roughly at latidude 54ยบ S, corresponding approximately to Ireland and England on the Nothern Hemisphere.
