Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is located on a ridge up from the Urubamba valley. The main site is “only” 2 430 m up, while The Sun Gate at the Eastern entrance is 300 m higher. Most recent archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was constructed as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas", it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. It is declared a Peruvian National Treasure.

The buildings are constructed with near-polished large stones in the Inca fashion. Mamy buildings are intact, with exception of the missing roofs, and show an impressive advanced building technique.

We stayed at hotel near the entrance, allowing us to enter the place as the sun was rising above the Andean mountains.
