Levada Walk

The mountain sides in Madeira are steep. The island is wet on the north-west and dry in the south-east In order to provide irrigation water over a larger area, the inhabitants have constructed water channels - called levadas - to distribute the water in an equitable way for all. The overall length exceed 2000 km. Some levadas run through tunnels. The levadas were partially built by slaved in the early days. Walkways are built on the side of the channels, and these are nice walking paths for us tourists.

One day we hiked high up on a mountain side and followed the water through the forest and past a family home up in the side of the mountain.
