Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park is located in north-eastern California. The dominant feature of the park is Lassen Peak, the largest plug dome volcano in the world and the southernmost volcano in the Cascade Range.

In the park there are cinder cones, mud on the flat areas, bubbling mud pots, water vapour drifting across the road, sulphur coloring the terrain, etc. And of course the smell of sulpur.

Hot Rock: A sign stands next to a large lump of volcanic rock. A mud flow in 1915 resulted from the melting of snows by the eruption. This 300 ton boulder, a chunk of that lava, is part of the volcanic debris which roared down the mountain side destroying all in it's path. This rock was so hot that it set fire to logs. This great lava boulder remained hot for many days, hence the name.
