The ground consists of soft sandstone. The climate is quite warm and dry, thus the vegetation is very sparse. And with little vegetation, little soil will be generated. Therefore, agriculture with any scale is only possible in a few select areas. Feed for livestock must for the most part be imported.
Throughout the landscape, there still are a number og concrete pillboxes (blockhouses) as remnants from the WW2.
