Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is located in the Sierra mountains north-east of San Francisco, right on the border between California and Nevada. Carson City in Nevada lies on the east shore.

 

Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, at an elevation of 1.897 m. It is 501 m deep, and the water is very clear.

 

Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction in both Nevada and California, both during summer, and skiing during winter. The area in California is not protected by a State Park status, but there are still important restrictioms in place to preserve the sourroundung terrain as an important recreation site.

 

In 1960 the Winter Olympics were held at Squaw Valley, just west of Lake Tahoe.
