La Palma Island

La Palma is the most North-Westerly of the Canary Islands, and part of Spain. The island is highly volcanic, with the most recent major eruption in 2021. The area is about 700 km2 and is the fifth largest in the Canary Islands group. The permanent population is about 85.000. The main crop is bananas, which are grown on the Eastern side. The Western side is fairly barren. Being located far off the African and European continets, the air is exceptionally clean and stable, providing an excellent site for the international telescope at 2366 m elevation.
