Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle is located inland from California Highway 1 near San Simeon on the coast. It was built by William Randolph Hearst, the publishing tycoon, and his architect Julia Morgan. The castle was built between 1919 and 1947. It contains several opulent buildings, a large outdoor pool, an indoor Roman pool, in it also had its own zoo with exotic animals.

The Piedras Blancas ("white rocks") Light Station is located just north of San Simeon. It was built in 1875 to protect ships passing by from wrecking on the rocky shoreline. It is fascinating to visit the lighthouse tower.
