Gullfoss - Strokkur - Thingvellir

Gullfoss is one of the impressive waterfalls in the south of Iceland. The river is fed by runoff from the large central glacier. Gullfoss has the highest water flow in Europe, with typical 1400 m3/sec. However, that is still far behind the flow through Itaipu Power Station (click) in Brazil with 62 000 m3/sec. But that again is far behind the flow from Amazonas at 216 000 m3/sec!

Strokkur is the most famous geyser on Iceland. It typically erupts every 6–10 minutes. Its usual height is 15–20 m, but sometimes erupts up to 40 m high.

Thingvellir (meaning the Valley of the Thing, ie. paliament) is site for Althingi, the worlds oldest parliament, and this was in constant use in the period 930–1262, when Iceland became a territory of Norway.
