The capital city is Funchal on the south coast. The population about 105.000. We stayed in a nice hotel right above the water.
The old city is quite compact and has several old buildings. As land areas for agriculture is scarce, fisheries has been a very important livelihood. The fish market in the city center is decorated with tiles depicting the life at sea and on the island. Among the fish offered, you will find espada ("sward"), an eel-like deep water fish living at depth between 200 and 1700 m. One of the best fishes of all kinds.
