Evora

Evora is located East of Lisboa, and South of the river Tejo which reach the ocean in Lisboa. The region south of the river was called Alen-Tejo, hence the present name Alentejo, which covers the area from Algarve in the South to the capital region of Lisboa in the North. The region is predominately flat, and during the summer temperatures may run very high - the average max. in Evora is 32 ÂșC.

 

Evora has a history dating back more than 6000 years. The Romans conquered the town around year 50 and built a temple on the top of city. The Moors out of Africa conquered the town around year 700, and in the middle ages the town was the capitol of Portugal for several hundred years. The old town center is located on a hilltop, with the Roman temple, the cathedral and other historical buildings.

 

Noted sights in the vicinity is the Chapel of Bones, the Roman viaduct and the stone circles of Almendres, dating back about 5-6000 BC. The circles are some of the most ancient monuments in the human history, and are believed to have astronomical significance.
