The eastern part of Madeira is very dry, and with little vegetation. We drove to the end of the road and hiked up into the terrain towards the very rocky north coastline, just at the tip of the island.
On return, we took the detours through the villages of Canical and Machico. The latter used to be an important fishing town. Now the ocean-going boats stood idle on land, due to reduced fishing quotas.
The return to Funchal took us under en extension of the Funchal Airport. This is infamous due the short runway.
