The west coast of Denmark lies unprotected against heavy weather and waves from the North Sea. Combined with the flat landscape made up for a large part of sand, this cases problems with sand dunes that are continually on the move.
Coming in from the sea, there are no discernible landscape features that help in navigation. For this reason, lighthouses play a very important role to ensure safety at sea. The lighthouses most known are located in Skagen at the very tip of Denmark, at Hirtshals, on the west coast, and Hanstholm further south on the coast.
The pictures in on this web page were taken in 2013, when we took the ferry from Oslo to Fredrikshavn, and from there drove west to the coast, then down the coast before returning to the east coast of Denmark and back to Fredrikshavn.
