Cuzco (also written as Qusqo in the Quechuan language) is a city with 430 000 inhabitants, located at 3 399 m asl. The city was the capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th century until the 16th-century Spanish conquest. Before the empire fell to the Spaniards in 1532, it extended from Ecuador in the North to southern Chile, a distance of 4000 km.
We took a train (Inca Class!) from Puno to Cuzco, a distance of 400 km. The track was very uneven, and the railcar had no shock absorbers whatsoever. Therefore, the train was very slow, and the trip took a long day.
In Cuzco we stayed in a hotel that had been converted from a Spanish colonial building.
