Córdoba

The present day Córdoba has about 255.000 inhabitants. The city was founded by the Phenicians, who in turn was conquered by the Romans. And around year 700, the muslim Moors occupied the area. And it is the Moors who put Córdoba on the present day map, in the form of the fabulous mosque - Alcázar. When the Moors were conquered, the mosque become a cathedral. Therefore, The interior in influenced by the two cultures and religions. What sets the building apart from any other, is the construction with 850 columns, which are connected with arches of Muslim design. The roof is made of wood, and almost flat, which also is a unique construction for this kind of - and huge  - building.

 

The city spans Rio Guadalquivir, which continues South-West and runs through Sevilla. The river is one of the largest in Spain, and provides a  transport route to the ocean. For this reason, Cordoba has through the ages been a very important trading post and cultural center.
