The Royal Cobalt Works factory (Blaafarveværket) has a long history, as it was was established as early as 1776. For over 100 years, thousands of people worked to extract cobalt from the deep mines at Modum. This special metal was used to make cobalt blue pigments, used in paint and in particular in cobalt blue glass. Modum cobalt mines supplied to the entire world’s porcelain and glass industry. In fact, between 1773 and 1893, Norwegian cobalt extraction accounted for as much as 80 % of the world’s production.
Today, there are guided tours into the old mines. The headquarters of the mines is now an art venue, hosting various artists, in addition to the permanent exhibition.
