This is a very well known ski destination, as well as a capital for mountain climbing, having Mont Blanc as the neighbour.
The town of Chamonix lies at 1050 m. One of the real attractions is the cable car that takes tourist up to Aiguille de Midi et 3842 m, a vertical difference of 2798 m, and only less than 1000 m below the top of Mt Blanc. And once you get to the top station, your feet feel very heavy!
These pictures are from a weekend during my stay in Geneva for a two week seminar. A group of us took the train to Chamonix and the gondola up to Aiguille de Midi. The engineering of this place is really impressive.
