Cart Ruts

The so-called cart ruts are deep tracks on the sandstone with a depth up to 60 cm. The distance between the tracks are 110 - 140 cm. It is believed the tracks were made by heavy sled or wheel loads, as the tracks lead from ancient quarries.

The ruts may be found over a large area, and some are criss-crossing each other. The most famous crossing is called the Clapham Junction after a railway crossing in London.

The ruts are very old, and some examples pointing to a period ca. 3800-2500BC. Since then, rain water has further deepened the tracks in the soft sandstone. Some tracks origin under the present ocean level.
