The Blue Mosque, also known by its official name, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is an Ottoman-era historical imperial mosque. It was constructed between 1609 and 1617 during the rule of Ahmed I and remains a functioning mosque today.
It is an impressive building: 73 m long, 65 m wide and 43 m to the top of the outer dome. Yet, this is a little smaller than the Hagia Sofia, next to it. The structure is surrounded by 6 minarets, being 64 m tall. The interior is filled with tiles and paintings. As most of these have a bluish color, hence the popular name of the mosque.
The mosque has a capacity of 10.000 worshipers.
