Big Sur

Big Sur a rugged and mountainous section of the California Highway 1 that stretches between a point little north of San Simeon up to Carmel, just south of Monterey Bay, a distance of about 115 km. Due to the geography, the road is repeatedly closed by mud slides during the rainy season.

The Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is located about midway along Big Sur. During our trip we stayed there overnight. But before entering the park, we stopped at a lookout and viewed - not a moonbeam - but a similar phenomena from the planet Venus, low on the horizon across the Pacific Ocean in a pitch black night without any stay light whatsoever. Just fantastic.

Piedras Blancas Light Station, located a few kilometer north of San Simeon, was built in 1875 to assist shipping up the coast with few recognizable features up the coast.
