Ballestas Islands located off the Paracas Penisula, has a rich fauna, and in particular sea birds, Humbolt penguins, and a large colony of seals and sea lions.
In former years, the island was a site for harvesting and exporting guano – bird shit – which is rich in nitrogen, and thus used as fertilizer. We visited the island in small boats.
