Aswan

Aswan is located in the south of Egypt. 1100 km upstream from Alexandria, and 685 km from Cairo. In the old days, the voyage from Aswan to Alexandria usually took 21 to 28 days in favorable weather.

Aswan is mostly known for its dam and power station, the water behind the dam extending 500 km upstream in the Nile. The dam also serve a purpose for regulating the spring flooding down the river.

In Aswan, we visited the Philae Temple one evening, giving us an historic experience.

We took a felucca to Elephantine  island, which is like a lush garden, in contrast with the desert extending almost the river bed on both sides. On a path on the island, we met a group of local folk dancers. Our friend is a semi-professional forl dances as well, and he joined the dance, to great enthusiasm by the locals.

We visited a Nubian family in their home, an unforgettable experience.
