Amazon Rain Forest

We arrived in Puerto Mondolado in flight from Cuzco.  Puerto Mondolado is located on the Tombopata tributary to the Amazon river. The distance the main Amazon city Manuas is about 4000 km, and from there to the ocean is about 1500 km more. (Total length of the Amazon is 6992 km.) The elevation of Porto Mondolado is only 183 m, so the river flows very slowly to the Atlantic Ocean. Actually, the water volume is so large, that the fresh water extends 160 km into the ocean.

On arrival, we were placed on a truck bed with the rest of the travelers. First stop was to divest of most of our luggage, as we were scheduled to walk thorough the jungle, carrying all out belongings ourselves. From there, we were driven to the river bed, where a typical river boat, canoe-like long and narrow, were waiting. After a couple of hours up the Tombopata river to Tombopata Lodge  (nowTombopata Research Center). This is right in the middle of the dense rain forest.

The lodgings were open sided to the jungle, and the other buildings were only roofs on top of platforms. During the days, we took walking excursions into the rain forest.
