Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)

Saigon was the second major stop on our tour starting in Bangkok.

Saigon has a population of 9 million. The city was a French colony from about 1862 to 1955, when the Vietnamese took power. The North of Vietnam tried to overturn the government in the South, which resulted in French Intervention. However The French did finally give up, resulting in the intervention by the Americans, thus starting the Vietnamese War. It is noteworthy that the Vietnamese themselves called it the American War, which USA lost in 1976.

The general geography is very flat, and the surrounding area is mostly farmland. However, Saigon is now a modern city, with a number of Western companies doing business from there throughout the region.

Saigon is located on the coast, North-East of the great Mekong River delta.
